The Neve 1073 is not a product with a story that needs much introduction in professional audio circles. Rupert Neve designed the original 1073 input module for the A88 console in 1970, and it went on to define the sound of professional recording for the next five decades. The combination of discrete Class-A circuitry, hand-wound Marinair transformers on both the input and output stages, and an inductor-based three-band EQ created something that engineers kept reaching for long after newer and ostensibly better-specified gear was available. The sound is warm, authoritative, and musical in a way that is genuinely difficult to replicate — which is why AMS Neve, the company that owns the original designs and continues to build in England, is still the benchmark against which every 1073-style preamp gets measured.
The 1073SPX puts that genuine Neve preamp and EQ into a modern 1U rack format with practical additions that make it work in a contemporary studio: front and rear I/O, DI input, switchable phantom power, hi/lo impedance selection, a 20dB pad, insert send and return with switchable pre/post EQ insertion points, and an output level control. The EQ is the same three-band inductor circuit from the original — fixed 12kHz high frequency shelf, two switchable midrange bands, and a high-pass filter — built with the same hand-wound custom inductors made in the UK. The gain structure gives you 80dB of headroom, which means this unit handles passive ribbons and quiet sources without complaint. It is not a clone, not a tribute, not an approximation — this is the real thing, built by the same company, to the same spec, in the same country.
This 2021 unit is in excellent condition. The faceplate, switches, and rotary controls are all clean and showing minimal signs of use. Everything functions correctly. A genuinely significant piece of studio hardware at a meaningful discount from new.
