Eastman MD415BK F-Style Mandolin – Black – Very Good
The F-style mandolin is the voice of bluegrass and ensemble playing — the scroll body, the pointed headstock, the percussive chop that cuts through a busy mix. Eastman's MD415BK delivers all of that in a hand-built all-solid instrument that consistently earns comparisons to mandolins costing considerably more. The combination of a solid carved spruce top with solid mahogany back and sides gives it a tone that's warmer and fuller than the typical maple-bodied F — plenty of that characteristic chop and projection, with a richness and sustain in the low end that's genuinely musical. The ebony fingerboard and adjustable compensated ebony bridge, bone nut, and Jescar fretwire are the kind of appointments you expect on serious instruments, and Eastman's hand-built construction shines through in how the whole thing resonates and responds. The black gloss top with natural back and sides and ivoroid binding is a striking look — bold and elegant at the same time.
This one is in very good condition and plays great. The black gloss finish shows light signs of play — as black finishes do, they reveal every little thing — but there are no dents or dings and the instrument is structurally excellent. Minor fret wear present but nothing that affects playability. It's been set up through our shop and strung with flatwound strings, which bring out a warm, smooth voice and feel wonderful under the fingers — a great choice on a mahogany mandolin.
