John Hanchet Alto Spanish Shawm, Key of G, 34.5 inches - Used

John Hanchet is one of the most respected makers of historical woodwind instruments in the English-speaking world — an English craftsman based in Norwich whose shawms are held in museum collections, played by professional early music ensembles including Piffaro, and whose instruments were described at the 1985 Boston Early Music Festival as a significant step up from anything else available at the time. His Spanish shawms in particular are well regarded for being uncomplicated, effective, and outstanding in all ways — simpler in construction than the wide-belled Renaissance shawm, quieter but still with real presence, and capable of playing chromatically over two octaves in the hands of an experienced player. Hanchet instruments are no longer easily available new and finding one in good playing condition is genuinely worthwhile for any early music consort player or double reed enthusiast.
This is an alto Spanish shawm in the key of G, measuring 34.5 inches in length — a less common pitch for this instrument type, worth noting for consort players matching to existing sets. The instrument is in Very Good condition with almost no cosmetic marks — a clean, well-preserved example. A reed is included.
