PRS has spent the better part of four decades chasing the question of what a Stratocaster-style guitar could be if you threw out the assumptions and started from first principles — and the SE NF3 is one of the most compelling answers they have come up with. The concept starts with the Narrowfield DD pickup, which is PRS's solution to one of the fundamental trade-offs in electric guitar design: humbuckers cancel noise but lose single-coil clarity and sparkle, while single coils have the voice but the hum. The Narrowfield DD uses taller bobbins, additional windings, and a mixed magnet and steel pole piece layout to get the hum cancellation of a humbucker while preserving the focused, lively, three-dimensional character of a single coil. Three of them in a 5-way configuration gives you a tonal range that covers an enormous amount of ground — thick and warm in the neck, chimey and glassy in the middle positions, punchy and cutting at the bridge, with none of the thinness or ice-pick shrillness that plagues lesser instruments in the bridge position. The poplar body is light and resonant, the Wide Thin maple neck profile is immediately comfortable for a wide range of players, and the rosewood fingerboard with PRS bird inlays is smooth and beautifully finished. The 25-inch scale length sits between Fender and Gibson territory and gives the guitar a slightly slinky, elastic feel under the fingers. The PRS patented tremolo is one of the more stable and responsive units at any price point — set up floating, it bends and flutters with confidence and returns to pitch reliably. For players who have always wanted an S-style guitar with more guts and less compromise, this is a serious option.
This one is in superb shape — looks nearly new, set up and playing great through the shop. There is one small ding on the lower side and minimal finish wear, both shown in the photos. Minimal fret wear. The pickguard may be a replacement but looks correct and presents beautifully. Comes with the PRS SE gig bag.
