PRS Silver Sky John Mayer, Maple Fretboard, Tungsten, Gig Bag - Used
The Silver Sky arrived in 2018 as the result of two years of close collaboration between Paul Reed Smith and John Mayer, and the mission statement was clear from the beginning: take everything that makes a great early-sixties single-coil guitar feel and sound the way it does, study it obsessively, and then build something better. Not a copy, not a reissue — a reboot. The details tell the story. The headstock shape is PRS's trademark design inverted, both to suit Mayer's playing style and to maintain consistent string length behind the nut for more stable tuning. The steel tremolo is set flush to the body so it only goes down in pitch, which increases body contact and makes the guitar acoustically louder — a deliberate choice that improves the signal-to-noise ratio of the single-coil pickups. The 635JM pickups are round and full with a musical top end that never crosses into harsh or ice-picky territory. Every specification on this guitar has a reason behind it.
This is the maple fretboard version, which carries the original 635JM neck shape — a 7.25" radius profile developed through research into vintage instruments and refined by Mayer playing guitars on stage until something felt exactly right. The result is exactly what it set out to be: a vintage Strat feel with modern refinement. Familiar and comfortable from the first chord, but tighter and more consistent than the vintage instruments it was inspired by.
Condition is Very Good. There is one small divot on the front of the guitar — visible in the photos — and otherwise the guitar shows only the light cosmetic wear consistent with the grade. Nothing structural, nothing that affects playability. Comes with the PRS premium gig bag.
