Epiphone Sheraton II – Natural – 2010 – Used Very Good
The Sheraton has one of the most distinguished histories in the Epiphone catalog. Introduced in 1958 under Gibson ownership as Epiphone's answer to the ES-355, it was hailed by blues legend John Lee Hooker — one of its most famous devotees — as an instrument that outperformed a 335. That is a bold claim, and players who have spent time with a well-set-up Sheraton tend to understand what he meant. The semi-hollow laminated maple body with center block gives it the feedback resistance of a semi-hollow with the warmth and resonance of a guitar that breathes, the set maple neck with SlimTaper profile is fast and comfortable, and the rosewood fingerboard with the distinctive V-block pearloid and abalone inlays and Vine of Life headstock inlay give the whole instrument a visual elegance that sets it apart from virtually everything else at the price point. The Epiphone humbuckers with individual volume and tone controls and three-way switching give you a wide tonal range from warm and round in the neck position to punchy and articulate at the bridge, and the gold Grover Deluxe tuners are a premium hardware choice that holds pitch reliably and looks the part on a guitar this refined. The 24-3/4 inch scale, multi-ply binding on the body, neck, and headstock, and single-ply f-hole binding complete an instrument that is genuinely luxurious in appearance and feel.
This example looks fantastic — natural finish showing off the maple grain beautifully, gold hardware gleaming, no meaningful cosmetic wear to speak of. Plays great with no fret wear and all hardware in superb shape. There is one important thing to note: the neck has a repaired whiplash crack — a type of crack that typically runs along the back of the neck and is pulled tight by string tension rather than forced open by it. This one has been professionally repaired in our shop. No cosmetic work was done to conceal it, and we are being fully transparent about its presence. This type of repair, when done correctly, has very little impact on the structural integrity of the instrument — the geometry is sound and the guitar plays and feels perfectly. It is priced accordingly. A great opportunity to get a killer-feeling, great-sounding semi-hollow at a meaningful discount.
