Brownsville New York Semi-Hollow ES-335 Style, Cherry Red - Used
The ES-335 format has a lot to answer for. Gibson introduced the thinline semi-hollow in 1958 and within a few years it was in the hands of BB King, Chuck Berry, Eric Clapton, and a long list of players who understood immediately that the combination of semi-hollow construction and a solid center block gave you something no solidbody or archtop could quite replicate — the warmth and bloom of a hollow guitar with the sustain and feedback resistance of a solid one. That voice has been widely imitated ever since, and the Brownsville New York version is one of the more honest attempts at it in the budget category.
This one has that warm, woody semi-hollow voice that the format promises — bloomy and musical, with a natural openness that you feel as much as hear. The double-bound maple body with bound f-holes is classic 335 in outline and construction, the chunky mahogany neck with cream binding is comfortable and confidence-inspiring under the hand, and the pair of humbuckers through the Tune-O-Matic and stopbar setup delivers a full, round tone that sits beautifully in a mix. Set up by our shop and playing well. Great value for the money — this one punches well above its weight.
