Paul Gilbert is widely regarded as one of the most technically accomplished rock guitarists alive — the kind of player whose speed, accuracy, and musicality set the standard for a generation of shredders who came up watching Mr. Big and Racer X. The Fireman is his guitar, and the FRM300 is the most refined version of it Ibanez has built. The distinctive reverse-offset body shape is immediately recognizable, and the specification underneath it is entirely Paul's own: an okoume body for bright, balanced tone and remarkable lightweight comfort, a three-piece okoume and maple set neck for stability and resonance, and a bound ebony fingerboard with narrow tall frets that make fast runs and wide bends feel effortless. This is a guitar engineered for speed and articulation at the highest level.
The three DiMarzio PG-13 mini humbuckers were custom voiced for Paul to combine the punch and output of a full humbucker with the clarity and chime of a single coil — a tonal balance that makes the guitar as expressive at moderate gain as it is devastating through a cranked amp. Through the 5-way switch the range of available sounds is genuinely wide, from glassy clean tones to full-throated leads. This one absolutely shreds, as it should.
