Imagine the mystic woodlands of the high north. Treefolk, known as the Fable, wander peacefully across the land. The elderly treefolk live in harmony with their young, who grow from the spliced limbs of each previous generation in an ongoing and harmonious reign of bizarre combinations. It’s this fantastical world that you’ll uncover in the chassis of the Fable Granular Soundscape Generator Delay Pedal from Walrus Audio. This pedal features five programs that harness the power of a dual DSP architecture that weaves sample and chop delay algorithms with granular effects. Musicians have a range of knobs to dial in the perfect sound, in addition to a buffered bypass and a tap tempo switch.

Delay programs and granular algorithms make the Fable go ’round
The Fable brandishes the power of a granular effect as well as delay. Together, this micro-sampling digital process makes minute tweaks and adjustments possible while making unique sounds in the process. Depending on how a user engages the grains, wielders of the Fable can achieve pitch and time stretching effects, play grains in reverse, or even read from several positions at once to create the ultimate comprehensive effect. No need to balk at the limitless possibilities — Walrus Audio has put streamlined controls at your fingertips that will send you on an exploration of its five main aspects.

Program I: reverse delay into reverse granular
Program I ouputs a reverse delay that runs into a reverse granular algorithm, with sampled grains shifted and played backward. The ensuing soundscape results from feedback paths jam-packed with reversal and re-reversal that build into gloriously organic, shifting, and complex ambiences. Trim the grain size, and you’ll find smooth, reversed transients. Beef the grain size up, and you’ll find stuttering reverse glitch psychosis.

Program II: forward delay into octave-up granular
With the second program, the name of the game is forward delay into octave-up granular. Sampled grains here get played at double speed. A cacophony of double-speed grains surges in the feedback path, treating you and your listeners to bright, lofty cascades.

Program III: analog delay into octave-down granular
Engage program three for a warm, dark, analog-style delay that runs into an octave-down granular program. Sampled grains here are played at half speed. These leisurely repeats meet analog-style processing. The result? Deep, roaring footfalls and murky atmosphere with plenty of bulk.

Program IV: multi-tap granular into multi-tap granular a.k.a. grain-verb
In the realms of program four, Fable runs two multi-tap granular algorithms in series. Here, multiple samples get played back from granular buffers simultaneously. The feedback paths build from the interrelationships of sampled sound points that produce glitchy webs and organic reverberance. Use the time knob to adjust the time-stretching effects on both algorithms.

Program V: forward delay into randomized pitch granular
Lastly, in program V, the Fable runs a forward delay into a randomized pitch granular program. Here, you’ll find random speeds of playback ranging from pitched down half speed to pitched up double speed or even forward and reversed playback from grain to grain. With each new grain sampled, pitch will change. The X knob in this program adjusts the rate of randomized pitch modulation.
