1984 Artur Teller Model 65 Violin – Made in Germany – Includes Bow and Case – Used Very Good
The Teller family has been part of the fabric of German string instrument making since the early nineteenth century, and Artur Teller's workshop in Bubenreuth — the small Bavarian town that became a center of German lutherie after World War II — produced instruments that have earned consistent respect among players and dealers alike. Bubenreuth itself is a remarkable story: a community deliberately rebuilt around the craft of instrument making, populated by luthiers and their families who relocated there in the postwar years and established workshops that collectively supplied instruments to players around the world for decades. Artur Teller was one of the central figures in that community, known for quality construction and careful wood selection. The Model 65 sits in the more accessible range of the Teller lineup — an honest, well-built workshop instrument rather than a fine solo violin — made from aged spruce top and flamed maple back, sides, and scroll with an ebony fingerboard and fittings, finished in the warm amber-orange varnish characteristic of the better German workshop instruments of this era.
This example has a bold, strong voice — full and projecting without any of the shrillness that plagues lesser instruments. It has been appraised at approximately $2,500 in current market value by a local, highly reputable violin shop whose assessment we trust. The top has some professionally repaired cracks, addressed many years ago by a reputable violin shop in Vermont — the repairs are solid and the instrument is structurally sound. Cosmetically it is in very nice shape, with a soft, attractive gloss to the varnish and almost no wear beyond the repaired cracks. Action measures 2.25mm on the E string and 3mm on the G string. The bow has been appraised at approximately $250 and is in very nice shape.
We are a guitar shop rather than a specialized violin dealer, and we are pricing this instrument accordingly — below the appraised value — to reflect that. We encourage serious buyers to have the instrument evaluated by their own luthier or teacher before purchasing, and we are happy to answer any questions we can. We are committed to full transparency about what we know and what we don't.
