1971 Gibson J-40 Acoustic Guitar – Hard Case – Used Good
The J-40 arrived in 1971 as Gibson's more accessible entry into the square-shoulder dreadnought market — a stripped-down sibling to the J-45 built with an economy satin finish and a pinless bridge, designed to deliver genuine Gibson tone at a working player's price point. Where the J-45 gets most of the glory, the J-40 has quietly developed a following among players who discovered that the fundamental voice — spruce over mahogany, double X-bracing, Gibson's square-shouldered body geometry — delivers a big, warm, room-filling sound that holds its own against guitars costing considerably more. The square shoulders give it a slightly different low-end character than a round-shouldered Gibson or a Martin dreadnought — fuller and more authoritative, with a warmth in the bass register that is immediately addictive. This one sounds huge, with a big warm bass that fills a room and a voice that is genuinely hard to put down. It is the kind of guitar that makes you want to keep playing it, and that is ultimately the most important thing.
The guitar has had some work done over its fifty-plus years of life, and we want to be fully transparent about all of it. The bridge has been thinned and the saddle slot was filled and redone — it is now correctly positioned and the guitar plays well, though this is about as low as the action will go before a neck reset becomes necessary. That reset is something we would recommend down the road; the overall structure is sound and the guitar would be an excellent candidate for that work when the time comes, unlocking even more of what this instrument is clearly capable of. A replaced bridge plate has been installed. There are several repaired top cracks and some finish checking around the bridge area, all shown clearly in the photos. The tuners have been replaced with a nice set of Kluson deluxe. The neck, fingerboard, frets, back, and sides are all in excellent shape — the guitar looks very good overall and the cosmetic issues are concentrated in the bridge area. Priced accordingly for a guitar that plays and sounds great.
