1963 Gibson Hummingbird Acoustic Guitar - Cherry Sunburst - Used
This 1963 Gibson Hummingbird is a breathtaking example of the "Golden Era" of Gibson acoustics. A true relic from the early 60s, this guitar possesses the iconic, wide-open voice and percussive "thump" that made the Hummingbird a legend among singer-songwriters. With its solid Sitka spruce top and mahogany back and sides, this instrument sounds incredible—the kind of tone that justifies the investment on its own.
The playability is excellent, supported by a fully functioning truss rod and a healthy amount of room left on the saddle for future action adjustments. This guitar has been well-maintained over the decades with high-quality professional work: the bridge plate was replaced in the 1990s by local luthier Frank Lucchesi (founder of the Luthiers Co-op in Easthampton), and the bridge was expertly reglued in 2017. While the top shows some characteristic belly bulge, it is extremely stable and has remained consistent for a long time.
Cosmetically, this Hummingbird is a real beauty with finish wear and checking perfectly consistent with its age. It features one repaired crack on the treble side lower bout from decades ago, which remains solid. There is minor fret wear that does not impact play; the first three frets were replaced in the 90s. While it plays great as-is, a buyer might eventually choose to refresh those first few frets again—we are happy to discuss performing that work for the next owner if desired.
