The Road Series is Martin's answer to the working player who wants genuine Martin quality and tone without the premium price tag of the Standard or higher series — and the D-13E makes a compelling case that the gap between the two has narrowed considerably. The solid Sitka spruce top is the real thing, scalloped X-braced and finished in full gloss, delivering the clarity, dynamic range, and projection that Martin spruce tops are known for. The ziricote fine veneer back and sides are where this guitar catches the eye and ear in equal measure — ziricote is a Mexican tonewood with a grain structure so dramatic and layered it looks almost architectural, deep cathedral-like figures with dark veins running through a lighter base that photographs strikingly and looks even better in person. Tonally it sits in rosewood territory — rich and complex in the low end, with clear articulation across the full range. The Performing Artist neck with High-Performance Taper is one of the more comfortable necks Martin has put on a production guitar — modern, fast, and easy to play for long stretches. The Richlite fingerboard and bridge are smooth and well-dressed, the mother-of-pearl pattern fingerboard inlays and rosette add genuine visual elegance, and the Fishman MX-T electronics with built-in soundhole tuner are a practical, transparent system that holds up on stage without fighting the guitar's acoustic character. White binding, multi-stripe rosette border, gloss body, and hand-rubbed satin neck finish complete an instrument that looks and feels considerably more expensive than it is.
This one has just been set up through our shop and plays beautifully — nice easy action, no fret wear, as fresh as they come. It sounds big and warm throughout, with a sweet warmth in the bass notes and good articulation across the full range that never loses that overall sweetness and warmth. A superb instrument at a real-world price, now upgraded with a proper SKB molded hard case rather than the stock soft shell.
